Kat Brault is an experimental dance artist, choreographer, and educator in Oakland, CA. They have been dancing for 21 years and making work for 18. Their work is highly collaborative and always asks what realms dance can contain and expand into. Kat's work invites both artists and audiences into the experience of presence where the atmosphere of the built world is palpable - there is a felt tension between the real world and the realities Kat explores that challenges the reproducibility of the ephemeral experience. There is a profundity in being here that Kat attempts to highlight over and over, often working with improvisation and live free writing.
Kat lived in Santa Cruz from 2015-2025 where they held artist residencies at Motion Pacific Dance in 2023, and at Indexical in 2021. They have danced with Cid Pearlman Performance Group, Gerald Casel, Mo Katzman, Raina Sacksteder, Alexandra Mannings, Alexandra Panzer, Tracey Lindsay Chan and trained with BANDALOOP. Kat studied Dance and Feminist Studies at UC Santa Cruz from 2015-2019 where they studied primarily with Gerald Casel, as well as Cid Pearlman, Cynthia Ling Lee, Bettina Aptheker, and Amy Ginther. In 2018 and 2019, they attended international dance festivals CAMPING in Paris, France and B12 in Berlin, Germany where they worked with Miguel Guttierez (New York), Erna Omarsdottir (Reykjavík, Iceland), Gerard and Kelley (Los Angeles), Robin Orlin (Johannesburg, South Africa), and Lali Ayguadé (Barcelona, Spain). They have also attended workshops and studied with Guillermo Gomez-Peña, Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, and Stephanie Zsalt, among others. All of their teachers throughout the years have made an impact on their work, and they are proud to carry the lineages that tether them to the vast histories of dance and performance.
